Do you remember running around in World of Warcraft?
Depending on the length of time you've been playing this popular MMORPG, you'll probably never forget having to wait until level 40, 30 or now 20, in order to obtain your first mount.
And the price was huge!
First you had to pay to learn to ride. And then you had to pay for the mount.
Many had to borrow from guild mates to acquire their first mount. I have even seen many beggars asking for gold in order to obtain a mount.
The good news is that you don't always have to pay to get a mount. You can obtain both groundet and flying mounts for free in five different ways...
1. Free Mounts from Classes
Some classes are so lucky that they have a free mount included with them.
If you want to acquire your first mount for absolutely nothing, you should choose to create a Death Knight, a Paladin or a Warlock.
2. Free Mounts from Dungeons
In some dungeons (or instances as they are also called) you can be lucky and obtain a rare mount drop from a boss.
Some of these are:
* Reins of the Bronze Drake - this mount may only be obtained by completing The Culling of Stratholme's time event in heroic mode. Drop rate 100% from the Infinite Corruptor.
* Swift Zulian Tiger - a Sabre Cat Mount, drops from High Priest Thekal in Zul'gurub, known as the "Tiger Boss".
* Swift Razzashi Raptor - a Raptor Mount, drops from Bloodlord Mandokir in Zul'gurub.
* Fiery Warhorse's Reins - this mount looks like a Warlock Epic Mount with armor. Drops from Attumen the Huntsman in Karazhan.
* Reins of the Raven Lord - this mount looks like a Hawkstrider with extra armor, and drops from the Druid Event Boss at Sethekk Halls for their Artisan Riding Spell.
* Amani War Bear - this mount can only be obtained by completing Zul'Aman's timed event, by killing the fourth animal boss within the time limit. It has a very low drop rate from the reward chest.
3. Free Mounts from Quests
You can get several free mounts, just from questing. One of them is the White Polar Bear, which you can obtain as a reward from quests in Storm Peaks, hidden in the Hyldnir Spoils.
Several others are seasonal rewards, like the Headless Horseman's Mount, and the Big Love Rocket.
4. Free Mount from Exalted Reputation
You really should get the Nether drake mount. It's a gorgeous looking drake, and you accumulate gold and/or experience points, whilst acquiring it.
The faction with which you should become exalted, is the Netherwing.
You start out by being hated by them, but speak to Mordenai in Shadowmoon Valley to start a series of quests - many of which are daily - to gain reputation with the Netherwing.
The first one is really cute. You have to feed the Nether drakes to gain their trust.
Tip: Gather Netherwing Eggs to gain an improving reputation faster.
When you finally have exalted reputation with the Netherwing, you get your first Nether drake for free. The others can be bought for only 200 gold each.
5. Free Mount from Achievements
Last, but not least, are the free mounts, which you can gain from achievements.
I know of several such mounts, but I'll only list some of the easier ones here:
Do a "For the Horde" or a "For the Alliance", and you'll get the Black War Bear mount.
Obtain 50 mounts, and you'll receive an Albino Drake by mail.
Obtain 100 mounts, and acquire the pretty Dragonhawk Mount.
