Today MIDI Controllers are available in various types, and if it is keyboard based, then in many keys. A controller is fundamentally a device that sends various types of midi messages to other digital instruments. This is the only way it can communicate and alter performance related parameters. It does not have a sound generating engine of its own, so it does not make any sound on its own. Since we are talking about types, the most popular MIDI Controllers, including foot and pad, among musicians are as follows.
Keyboard Controllers - These are more popular among keyboard / piano players since these keyboard instruments have keys on them. It's like familiar territory for keyboard players. You get it in different sizes - 61 keys and 88 keys for performers. You also get compact keyboard instruments for those looking for portable options.
Non keyboard controllers - Includes midi keyboard devices like midi Pad controllers, midi control surface, minus the keys. Whether in studio or on stage, the various performance parameters can be changed using pads, switches, knobs, and faders. Non keyboard midi controllers are mostly used by programmers, producers, DJs, and other musicians.
Pedal controllers - Lets you play bass lines, harmonies, drums, percussion sounds, even sound effects on other midi instruments while keeping your hands free for playing. Lot of organists use to play bass lines using pedals and the same can be done using these controllers. The Roland PK-5 Dynamic MIDI Pedal is one such instrument that lets you play bass lines on MIDI musical instruments.
Performance parameters can be controlled or altered using keys, pads, switches, knobs, and faders that are commonly found on these devices. Midi is the language that digital instruments understand and is used to talk to each other, which can be controlled using controllers. With this information, you can check out the various types of MIDI Controller.
