If you're tired of watching your dog scratch nonstop, chew his paws and lose a lot of hair it's time to get to the source of your dog's skin allergy.
When I first heard about dog allergies, I thought it was a minority of dogs. But after I started researching the subject I discovered dog skin allergies are actually really common. In fact, one veterinarian said dog allergies are so common that most dog owners will have to deal with them at some point.
It can be tricky to diagnose these allergies and get to the source to eliminate it.
The symptoms are wide ranging. Your pet might have dry, flaky skin or moist, red inflamed skin. Ear problems are a symptom of dog allergies. So is excessive hair loss and lots of scratching. Some dogs chew their paws until they're raw.
There are many different symptoms. But you know it's not the behavior of a healthy pet. So, what do you do?
It's a 2-part method. One, is treating the symptom and getting relief to your pet. The other is getting to the source of the matter and removing it from your pet's life.
Let's talk about the source first.
Your dog's allergy could be stemming from his food. He may be allergic to one of the ingredients. About 15-20% of dog allergies are food related. Read the label and change to another brand with none of the ingredients in the first. After a few weeks, if your dog's skin clears up, you'll have an answer.
However, dog allergies are also flea related and even environmental just like you or I. Your dog could be allergic to the fabric in his bedding, or dust or pollen. Those are a little harder to determine.
Some vets say all allergies are nutrition deficients. So, if you upgrade your pet's food, you may find the allergy symptoms disappear.
As far as relief goes, there are some home remedies that can go a long way towards helping your dog feel better. A colloidal oatmeal bath is one of the most popular, fastest and most effective means to give remedy to the constant and nagging itching that your dog feels. At the first sign of too much scratching and your dog's itching, make sure that you try the classic oatmeal bath.
You can use a commercial oatmeal shampoo or make an oatmeal paste by mixing oatmeal and water to form a thick paste. If you make the paste, slather it on the inflamed skin areas and let it sit for a 5-10 minutes. Yes, you'll have to entertain your pet to keep him from licking it off!
Oatmeal baths are very effective at healing and soothing irritated skin.
Many dog owners have had success with giving their dog a Benadryl tablet (or ½ of one if it's a small dog). This will ease the itching too.
Some vets recommend regular cortisone shots and/or steroids for your pet. While this may provide a short term solution, the long term effects of these treatments can be liver or kidney disease. A holistic vet will work with you to find a more gentle treatment.
Obviously, any treatment you apply, should be a short term solution while you get to the source of the allergy and eliminate it.
The first step toward that is a diet change.
