As a company commander in the Army National Guard, you have the responsibility to maintain accountability of your equipment, just like that of an Active Duty commander. Per military regulations, you have command responsibility for your unit's equipment. That means if something gets loss or destroyed, you will ultimately be held accountable.
This article is not created to teach you Army Regulations concerning supply procedures. Instead, the purpose of this article is to simply give you basic tips to help you succeed with unit supply. This guidance does not replace any Army regulation, local procedures or directives from your Property Book Officer. It's simply one former company commander's opinion.
Let's get started.
First of all, prior to taking command, you must do a thorough change of command inventory. By doing a thorough inventory, you will set yourself up for success right from the start. Also, your supply sergeant and unit leaders will know you are serious about unit supply.
Once you finish your inventory, you must sub hand receipt your unit property to each platoon. Your goal is to get everything (or just about everything) off the commander's hand receipt. Once you've finished this, advise your Platoon Leaders and Platoon Sergeants to do the same thing within their platoons.
Next, make sure your unit inventories are conducted as required. Ensure all sensitive items, cyclics and other inventories are conducted on time and to standard. Don't miss any inventory suspense.
The true secret to success is to be involved. Sure, you can't be at the armory 24/7, but you must make sure your supply sergeant is doing his or her job. At a minimum, you should participate in the inventories yourself. You can do this during IDT weekend, after a company training meeting or anytime else.
Another secret is to take your Property Book Officer out for lunch. After all, they are the subject matter experts. You can learn more about unit supply in a 20-minute lunch, than you can reading Army Regulations for several hours.
Another helpful Army Supply tip is to have a updated Army Supply SOP and effective Command Supply Discipline Program (CSDP). Your Company XO can spearhead these projects, but you should provide command oversight and spot-check often.
Every drill weekend, have your supply sergeant print out a current copy of the unit property book. Have your Supply Sergeant highlight the changes from the previous month. Ask what equipment is hand-receipted out to different units or is at the maintenance shop for services or repair.
Finally, you must familiarize yourself with Army Regulations concerning supply. Do a quick Google search and download the digital version onto your computer. Set aside an hour or so each week to educate yourself. You will be amazed at what you will learn.
In conclusion, Army Supply at the company level is a huge responsibility for company commanders. The secret to success is to start strong, by conducting a thorough change of command inventory. Next, company commanders must be actively involved and complete all required inventories on time and to standard. Finally, commanders must empower their company XO to manage the CSDP and Supply Procedures.
Remember, you may be part-time commander, but you still have a full-time responsibility!
