Fighter Nintendo
In 2008, Street Fighter 4 reintroduced and re-sparked a major interest in the fighting game genre. The game attracted gamers old-school and new-school alike. Fighting games require not only technical skills and great reaction speed but also require knowledge in mind games. When you lack a mental edge in fighting games, you become predictable and easy to beat. A firm grasp in mind games can make the difference between a good player and a great player.
- Basic anti-air moves
For this article we will focus on Ryu, one of the best all around characters in the game and one of the easiest to pick up. When your opponent jumps at you, there is no way for him to block in the air. This raises an important question. If they cannot block in the air then how are you able to hit him out of a jumping attack? For this question, we need to consider the many anti-airs that Ryu possesses. If your opponent jumps at you and will land above your head then you can hit them out of the air with a crouching fierce punch. This attack is active directly above you and since you are crouching, your hit box is safe from the above attack. If an opponent is about to land in front of your feet then a shoryuken (dragon punch) is the optimal move to use. This move is great because it propels you slightly forward as it becomes active. The last practical anti-air to use is a standing fierce kick. When an opponent lands slightly out of the shoryuken range, this is the move to use. All these anti-airs combined keep you grounded and prevent any careless jump ins from hitting you on the way down.
- Why corners play a huge role into good mind games
The purpose of the article is not only to educate you in basic anti-airs but to teach you one of the most important and under valued concepts in mind games. Many know in Street Fighter that one needs to stay out of the corners. However, many do not know why the corners are such a dangerous area for those in the corner.
The closer an opponent is moved into a corner, the more likely they are to attempt to jump out of it.
The more you push an opponent into a corner the more you need to be aware of your anti-air options. Anti-air them enough times and your opponent will become trained not to ever jump in at you. Since the option to jump in at you is taken away, your opponent will also make more mistakes since they are so focused on not being able to jump in. This ultimately results in more wins and less frustration with the game.
