If you are leading student tours to Paris you will no doubt already be aware of the many novels set in the French capital. Recommending these to your students before you take the trip to Paris can help fuel their imaginations and aid their understanding of Paris's historical and cultural importance. No matter what subjects your students are studying, there are books to suit all tastes and pique their curiosity.
A Moveable Feast
Most people taking student tours to Paris will be well aware of the cultural value of the city. For a straightforward (not to mention short) read, Ernest Hemingway's memoir of his younger years in Europe (especially Paris) is an evocative and lively tale. The story features a wide range of characters from the worlds of art and literature, including James Joyce, Jon Dos Passos, Ezra Pound, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ford Madox Ford and Wyndham Lewis. Hemingway's compact, evocative prose is guaranteed to bring the inter-war glory of Paris alive for your students prior to your Parisian student tours.
A Tale of Two Cities
Not strictly a Parisian novel in its entirety, and possibly a hard-sell for those conducting student tours with those relieved to have recently seen the back of Dickens, a Tale of Two Cities still provides a good insight into the history of Paris. The book deals with the French peasantry in the build up to the French Revolution, then follows the brutality dished out towards the aristocracy once the Revolution started. Dickens isn't to everyone's taste, but fans, or those with the time to dedicate to this weighty tome, will find much to enjoy in the book.
The Tropic of Cancer
Henry Miller's once controversial book was for a long time seen as the expatriate Paris novel to read - and is still devoured by those embarking on their student tours. The book caused a sensation when it was published in America in 1961, though it had previously been published by the more liberal French, in 1934. The novel has still has elements that modern readers might consider somewhat racy, but today is critically acclaimed as one of the great books of the 20th century.
Paris to the Moon
Adam Gopnik's collection of columns from his time living in Paris is a more contemporary work. Gopnik was commissioned by the New Yorker to write about living and working in Paris in the mid 1990s, and this book brings together his dispatches from the frontline. Very North American in terms of references and names dropped, for those from other parts of the world, this book will still help to bring to life the Paris of today.
