When packing for a backpacking trip, it is a pretty good idea to pack light. Whilst you will definitely need a number of key essential items, it is not necessary to pack all of your closet, plus the kitchen sink for good measure. You can guarantee that you will regret those extra kilos when you are half way up a steep trail and baking in temperatures of 30 degrees plus.
A light-weight sleeping bag and pillow case is a good idea. Not all hostels provide bedding, and even when it is provided, it might well look like at least twenty other travelers have slept on it first. So take your own. You can always use it as an emergency towel, or simply for extra warmth as required.
A torch is a no-brainer really. Whilst a small hand torch is useful, a head torch is even better as it leaves your hands free. Head torches are also useful for reading late at night. Do not forget the batteries, of course. Or your torch will be rather useless!
Other useful gadgets include duct tape-great for fixing holes in mosquito nets, your clothes, or your rucksack.
Zip-Lock baggies are also great little gadgets to have around. You can use them for storing items like cameras and wallets if there is a chance they will get wet, or keeping snacks sealed in for long bus rides. There are a million uses for plastic bags, so never underestimate the importance of this essential little item.
A whistle is a useful little gadget to keep in your bag: great for emergencies and attracting attention where necessary. Although if you are planning on backpacking around Alaska, it would be best to take a plastic one as opposed to a metal one, or you might lose your lips...
A knife is an essential item, as is a compass and first aid kit. A small mirror is also useful to have in your bag. Other essential items include insect repellent and sun-block.
Finally, make sure you take a sturdy rucksack to pack all of your essential items and gadgets. The last thing you want is for your rucksack to fall apart half way to Nepal-it would then be a memorable trip for all the wrong reasons!
