Kombat Deadly
They probably picked the wrong person to review this movie... Even as I type this now, the Shaw Brothers Fan Boy in me just wants to write one huge paragraph with no full stops or punctuation about how much I love this film... But for the sake of writing a professional article, I will put the "Writer" hat on and review the cult masterpiece entitled The Five Deadly Venoms.
Of all the kung-fu films made through the 70s this is one that has developed a real cult following. With the exception of all the films Bruce Lee starred in and a few others, this is a film that has stood the test of time and it's due to the unique story. The film's influence has also carried into other areas, from music such as the Wu-Tang Clan, (it's practically impossible to listen to a Clan album, solo or otherwise without hearing audio grabs) TV commercials for Sprite and video games such as Mortal Kombat.
A dying kung fu master sends out his last student in order to find out what happened to his previous five students, who were members of the banned Poison Clan. He is to see if they are acting for good and if not, he has to stop them. The master also wants the student to find another member of the clan who ran off with the clans money which the master wants used for good. All of the students end up in one town looking for the old man with all of the money, and soon everyone is battling to get the money.
The main appeal of this film comes from its plot and characters as opposed to the non stop action that many look for in the genre. It doesn't have many fight scenes, but the ones on display here are top shelf. The duels that take place are always tense as the build up between the warring styles is handled very well. As an audience you genuinely want to see who is going to come out on top in a kind of Batman Versus Wolverine type jump off.
Interestingly enough with this movie, the absence of constant action or fighting leads to development of a great plot, this is one of the few kung fu films where you are really interested in the storyline and care about the outcome. Unlike many films from it's era, Venoms is surprisingly darker and less corny then you'd think, killing off main characters, both good and evil, in very unapologetic and anti climatic ways.
With all the praise that people douse on the film, one must remember that, depending on the language track you select, it is a dubbed old school Kung Fu movie. So of course the voiceovers are going to seem corny and out of place to viewers who aren't familiar with the genre. But even in its short comings and it still manages to be successful. With its cinematography and clever story telling, it is a great case study for filmmakers and writers both. Yet at the same time anybody who wants to catch a bit of 70s trashy Kung Fu treachery, will also have a great time shouting at their screens, cheering for their favourite member of the Five Deadly Venoms. 8/10.
