Tanks are usually obtained by Terran players for their powerful, long ranged attack in game.
Tanks are great for acting as a powerful defense for when you expand or are teching up behind your wall in your base. They are great units to get to defend from any early strong rush like facing a Protoss player sticking with the 4 Gate build.
Siege Tanks do well against such units as Marines, Marauders, Sentries, Stalkers, Roaches, and Hydralisks. They are not the best against melee units which in this case are Zerglings and Zealots especially with their speed upgrades.
When units get too close the Siege Tanks will not be able to attack them. That is why you need to protect them well with Marines preferably because they can take care of units like Zerglings. Also if your opponent has air units like Banshees then having Marines or even Vikings with them is a great way to protect them.
Siege Tanks are also good to kind of make your opponent stay inside their base. Once you have them in position it will be hard for them to defend without the right units.
Placement is very important when using them. In battle you want to have them away from your opponent army. Be sure to have units a distance in front of them while you move. Using Marines and Marauders in front is ideal so they can act as a shield to protect them.
Also having air units with them helps. They can give the Siege Tanks vision on the high ground and even extend their vision making them be able to attack units further away.
If you face a Terran player that has walled off then having Siege Tanks with some Vikings to get in position outside to just attack their wall is a very good idea.
This is a great strategy to use because they really cannot do anything like move out, drop Marines and Marauders, or even attack with Banshees (watch out for cloak in this situation).
A cool strategy to use is on a map like Lost Temple. Drop some Siege Tanks at the top of a cliff overlooking your opponents expansion to deal damage. If it is early in the game they probably will not have air units to deal with it.
Dropping Tanks at the corner of their base is a good idea too so you can already be in position making it difficult for them to take them out.
