Since the late 17th century wine has been stored in bottles and sealed with corks. This was an enormous technological advance as previously most wine was consumed quickly to prevent it from oxidizing or going bad. The cork keeps out most air allowing the wine to be stored without going bad quickly. In fact some wines improve with age and some of the most famous actually require some aging before they even taste good. However man has long had difficultly removing corks, and although the simply corkscrew can work amazingly well for someone who uses one often, there have been scores of patents issued for various cork removing devices since the 17th century.
Now not all wines are sealed with corks, made from cork, a natural substance. Some are sealed with face corks, which serve the same purpose but which are cheaper. More and more we are also seeing screw top bottles. Previously only cheap wine came with screwtops, but more and more expensive wine is appearing with screwtops as a certain percentage of corks are tainted and negatively effect the wine. Still, corks are not going away anytime soon, perhaps never entirely.
Besides the simply manual corkscrew, there are also models with various types of lever arrangements to make removing the cork easier. These are very popular, and the Rabbit and Houdini are extremely popular examples that are probably available several places near you. These still however require some manual effect to extract the cork, which may be difficult for the elderly and those with various medical conditions like arthritis.
Automatic corkscrews are ones that require to effort to pull the cork out. Obviously these are powered somehow, and the two most popular are electric powered and gas powered, Electric powered ones commonly have rechargeable batteries and gas powered ones generally work off of compressed CO2 cartridges. A thin needle is pushed through the cork, and inert CO2 is pumped in forcing the cork out.
Not surprising, many people shun modern corkscrews. Antique corkscrews are very popular and many are very beautiful as well. They work perfectly fine, although you will not find gas or electric powered ones. A quick look at most auction sites will uncover plenty of these.
Most wine aficionados end up with numerous wine openers, both because they are common gifts, and also because different styles of openers are often more appropriate for certain uses, for example older corks and formal events and more.
