What happens if a marlin pulls you underwater while fishing?
Have you seen the guys on a boat, strapped in a chair, with a fishing pole harness on fighting a huge marlin? I saw a video on Americas funniest videos and the guy flew off the back of the boat and was strapped to his pole. I was thinking about doing this in Hawaii but sure as hell don't want to be pulled down, Im terrified of deep water.
So what happens, is there like a safety quick release? How fast could a marlin pull you down?
There was an incident about 15-20 years ago off one of the San Diego long range tuna boats (where they fight fish standing up, not assisted by a fighting chair). The guy (I believe an off-duty deckhand, so he knew his stuff) slipped on the deck and was pulled over while fighting a 200+ pound tuna. The harness swiveled around his waist so he was being pulled backwards underwater and couldn't reach the release clips. (Yes, harnesses have release clips.) But fortunately he had a pair of dikes (line clippers) in his pocket and he managed to cut the line. I remember this because it was such a rare incident.
But in general, this isn't a problem -- even with 100 pound test line, the drag shouldn't be set at more than 40 pounds. You'd have to slip on the deck, or have the boat go over a sudden sharp swell (or both) to have a pull of that amount drag you over.
Honestly, I think a lot more fishermen are killed by their boat sinking than by freak accidents like this (or a billfish spearing them). But the freak accidents get all the press.
