What might someone looking for training tracks certified by Microsoft expect from providers these days? Patently, companies must supply a number of different options that meet the requirements of Microsoft authorised training routes. It's a good idea to look for a person who's got industry experience, who can give you some ideas on which area of the industry would suit you, and the kind of tasks that are appropriate for someone with your character and ability. Confirm that your training is designed to your ability level and skills. A quality company will always guarantee that the course is appropriate for the career you want to get into.
One area often overlooked by new students thinking about a course is that of 'training segmentation'. Basically, this means the breakdown of the materials to be delivered to you, which can make a dramatic difference to the point you end up at. You may think that it makes sense (with a typical time scale of 1-3 years for a full commercial certification,) for your typical trainer to courier the training stage by stage, until you've passed all the exams. However: What if you don't finish each and every exam? And what if you find the order of the modules counter-intuitive? Because of nothing that's your fault, you may not meet the required timescales and therefore not end up with all the modules.
The very best situation would see you getting every piece of your study pack couriered to you right at the start; the whole caboodle! Then, nothing can hinder your capacity to get everything done.
Looking around, we find a plethora of professional positions up for grabs in computing. Deciding which one could be right for you is a mammoth decision. Since having no commercial background in Information Technology, in what way could we be expected to understand what any job actually involves? The key to answering this dilemma correctly lies in an in-depth talk over a variety of topics:
* Your individual personality and what you're interested in - what work-related things you enjoy or dislike.
* Is it your desire to accomplish a closely held aspiration - for example, working from home sometime soon?
* How highly do you rate salary - is it the most important thing, or is job satisfaction higher up on your priority-list?
* With many, many ways to train in Information Technology - it's wise to get some background information on what differentiates them.
* Having a serious look at the level of commitment, time and effort you'll make available.
In these situations, it's obvious that the only real way to investigate these issues will be via a meeting with an advisor that has a background in Information Technology (and more importantly it's commercial requirements.)
At the top of your shopping list for a training program should be 24x7 round-the-clock support via trained professional instructors and mentors. So many companies we come across will only offer a basic 9am till 6pm support period (maybe later on certain days) with very little availability over the weekend. Avoid, like the plague, any organisations that use call-centres 'out-of-hours' - with your call-back scheduled for office hours. This is no use if you're stuck and need help now.
Be on the lookout for training schools that have multiple support offices active in different time-zones. These should be integrated to enable simple one-stop access and 24x7 access, when it suits you, without any problems. Find an educator that goes the extra mile. Because only round-the-clock 24x7 support provides the necessary backup.
An all too common mistake that potential students often succumb to is to focus entirely on getting a qualification, and not focus on where they want to get to. Universities are brimming over with direction-less students that chose an 'interesting' course - rather than what would get them an enjoyable career or job. Never let yourself become one of those unfortunate students who choose a training program that on the surface appears interesting - and get to the final hurdle of an accreditation for something they'll never enjoy.
Prioritise understanding the exact expectations industry will have. Which particular qualifications they'll want you to gain and how you'll build your experience level. Spend some time assessing how far you think you'll want to progress your career as it will force you to choose a particular set of certifications. Obtain help from a professional advisor that 'gets' the commercial realities of the area you're interested in, and who can give you 'A day in the life of' synopsis of what duties you'll be performing on a day-to-day basis. It's good sense to know if this change is right for you long before you embark on your training program. After all, what is the point in starting to train and then find you've gone the wrong way entirely.
