1. Choose the right mat for your application
Oil absorbent mat pads are available in different weights and you should choose the right type based on the size of spill that has the potential to happen. They are available in three weights: light, medium and heavy, for use in different spill situations. Light-weight oil mats should be used when you have a thin spill over a large surface area, medium-weight mats for general everyday oil leaks and spills and heavy-weight mats should be used when you have large spills that need to be cleaned up quickly.
Oil mats are also available in different configurations to suit different applications in your facility. You should use pads for quick cleanup of leaks and spills and rolls for leaks and overspray from machinery. You should place rolls along the length of your machines to prevent any leaks or drips from reaching the floor. Having the right type of mat for your potential spill situation is a good starting point for getting the most out of your oil absorbent mats.
2. Use to full absorption capacity
When you are using absorbent mats to soak up an oil spill you want to make sure you are using them to their full capacity so that you don't end up spending more money on spill supplies because you change them out too early. You could choose an oil absorbent mat that makes it easy for you to identify when it is saturated, the best way of doing this is to choose a white coloured mat. This will enable you to easily see when the mat has been used to its full capacity and needs changed out. Brown oil-only mat pads do the opposite and hide leaks and spillages for a cleaner appearance so they stay on the job longer, look cleaner for longer and you don't replace them too early. A good tip to make sure you are using your oil mats to their full absorption capacity is to make sure you don't put them on top of each other as it is likely that the mat on top will be thrown away before it has been fully saturated. All mats you are using for clean up should have direct contact with the spilled liquid so that this is avoided.
