Why won't my Japanese Sega Saturn save my progress?
Last November I took a trip to Japan and, while there, broke down and bought a Sega Saturn. There's a franchise I've been a fan of for a decade but have never been able to play the games it's based on because they were never released in North America.
Anyways, now that I've gone through a transitional phase and have been able to settle down and actually start playing said games, I've noticed a bit of a problem. It seems that the Saturn won't save my progress. Every time I pop the disk back in and turn the Saturn back on, I have to start right from the beginning. Let me tell ya', I'm getting mighty tired of the first level of Sakura Taisen.
So what's the deal? Why won't it save? Is it genuinely broken? Does it only save progress while the power is on? Should I have splurged that extra bit on a memory cartridge? Am I doin' somthing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If the game is not saving properly, then it is most likely an internal problem. The good news is that could be (and probably is) as simple as swapping the internal battery out. I had to do it for mine as well. I first noticed mine when everytime I turned the system on it would ask me the time or language, etc. haha.
As for the memory cartridge you asked about, some of the Sega Saturn games, including some of the Street Fighter games, you need a memory cart RAM module that plugs into the Saturn (the big port on top just behind the disc tray.) It's literally Video RAM to help make the game run, and the game will not even start without it.
