What exactly is darkness? Does darkness really exist? These are two questions that I have been pondering. So I set out to find the answers. I used both scientific knowledge, and Biblical knowledge to answer both questions.
You might be asking yourself, how could the bible, and its teaching help to answer those two questions? You might also ask yourself, how can science and the Bible agree? Well it can. And in a few minutes I am going to tell you how.
First let us take a look at the book of Genesis, 1st chapter starting at verse 14.
14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. 16 God made two great lights-the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning-the fourth day.
So you see from these verses that God never intended us to ever be in total darkness. He made the Sun to illuminate the day in bright light. Then he made the moon, and stars to illuminate the night. You can go outside at nighttime, and once your eyes adjust you will be able to see what is close around you. Maybe not as well as during the day but you can still see to get around. Thus God purposely designed our world so we would never be in darkness, there would always, however dim be a light shining through.
Now lets look at this in a scientific way. Science answers the questions like this. First we answer the question does darkness really exist? The scientific answer is that darkness does not exist. Darkness is simply the absence of light. Light we can study, darkness we cannot. Darkness cannot be measured; light on the other hand can be measured. How can we tell how dark a certain space is? We measure the amount of light. A simple ray of light can break through darkness and illuminate it.
Thus science answer the first question what is darkness? Darkness is simply the absence of light.
So, in fact darkness is not of God at all. God gave us light. Something, which can be studied, and measured. Something that can be tangibly proven to exist through scientific means.
Satan created darkness when he convinced man to disobey God, and fall from grace. Darkness in reality is sin. Because Satan is the liar of all liars he has convinced us that darkness does exist. When in reality it is simply the absence of God's light.
Isaiah chapter 9 verse 2 says:
2 The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death [a]
a light has dawned.
Isaiah is referring to Jesus I believe. For he is the great light that we who have been walking in sin (darkness) see. This is confirmed in John chapter 8 verse 12; [ The Validity of Jesus' Testimony ] When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
So, through science and the Bible we have proven two things. The first is that darkness does not exist. Darkness is simply Satan trying to keep us from the light of God. It is an absence of God in our lives. Satan uses any means possible to attempt to block out God's light from us. He uses other people, drugs, alcohol, finances, sickness, grief, and the list can go on. He uses whatever lie he can to bind us, and blind us to God's grace. And when we finally accept God, and God starts moving in our lives he turns on the lies even harder. Satan is the father of all liars, and his biggest lie is the darkness he attempts to spread over our life's.
We have also proven that God gives us light. Something that we can study, and measure. Something that is real. A tangible thing that proves his existence. He gave us not only the sunlight, and the moonlight to light our earthly home. But, he gave us the true light of the world. Himself! In the form of flesh he came, suffered, bled, and died for us. His light broke through the darkness in his resurrection illuminating the world in light that can never be extinguished.
His light is the supernatural force that can heal us, deliver us, and set us free from the darkness that Satan tries to bind us in.
So in closing this article I just want you to remember that when the darkness falls on your life. And, despair overwhelms you to where you think you will never see the light again. Look to the cross for the light of the world will shine through. Just as physics teaches us, a single ray of light can split the darkness, and illuminate the darkest space. That light is JESUS CHRIST. Amen!!!!!!!
