I have a blue chihuahua and he has a genetic skin problem called Alopecia and lost most of his fur. It didn't happen until he was 6 months old and it stopped falling when he was about 2 years. He goes to the vet but I was told there is nothing to do because its genetic. All kinds of tests were done.
His fur is long around his neck and chest, and back of his legs. Its really short and rough on his back, and bald on the top of his head and his ears except for a few long strings. None of his fur is soft, but I still pet him. The poor thing looks a mess.
Should I keep him shaved so his hair is all the same length or just leave him alone? I put sunscreen on his head in the summer and dog clothes to protect his back. I give him warm baths with special shampoo but he crys and howls like I'm killing him. It doesnt hurt, he just hates it.
I also have a blue chi with the same problem. He has thin hair on his back, but beautiful long hair everywhere else. I would not sell him because he was blue. Knowing they can have problems, sometimes major problems I could not sell him. Luckily his only problem is a thin coat in one spot. He is a long hair. There is nothing you can do, nothing you can feed him. It's a lifelong condition. Baths will not help. My blu chi is healthy, competes in agility and soon to compete in Rally. Just keep him comfy and love him.
