Usa Vers
First I must tell you that I never studied poetry, nor was I born to any particular "school" of poetry. I simply wrote what was in my heart down on paper. If it later proved to be iambic pentameter than it is purely coincidental. I believed that poetry was very singular; revolving around circumstances that only the reader could identify and appreciate.
Back then my inspiration included topics as varied as music, girls, hate crimes, self-dislike and twilight encounters. For the most part, writing poems was a spontaneous and impulsive act. When I first began writing poetry I simply wrote down my initial thoughts feelings or the circumstance for the poem and it became the first line. The next step I took was finding a word to rhyme with the last word of the first line; usually accomplishing it by alphabetizing the word as in:
Rain: Bane: Cain: Domain: Gain: Jane:
Lane: Main: Propane: Remain...
I then used whichever word that I thought would work the best at the end of the second line.
I believed that a poem had to rhyme to be a poem so I always rhymed my lines. I didn't think much, or even know about, meter then. I did try to keep my rhyming lines relatively the same length though, which gave the poem some sort of structure.
Since I have learned of rhetorical devices, form structure and symbolic language, and come to appreciate them; I try to incorporate them in my poetry whenever possible. I especially like alliteration, irony in some instances, using puns and asking rhetorical questions. I love short love poems, and while sonnets do have a place in my heart I have never condemned myself to such syllabic prisons. I prefer to write free verse, or vers libra, interweaving enjambment and end-stopping within the verse to establish a rhyme pattern.
The urge, for me, to write a poem now is usually sparked by either an intense emotion or pure confoundment. In general, though, I think about what kind of poem I want to write, the tone that I want to convey and my target audience. These three factors, more than anything else, determine the overall poem.
For example, if I was writing a poem for kids I would use alliteration and onomatopoeia along with rhyme to capture their attention. Furthermore, if I were to teach children to write poetry I might introduce them to an acrostic poem(a poem which spells out the initial letter of each line spells out the topic, reading down) and have them choose words that begin with each letter to describe their favorite things or people.
