Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume, is the third installment of the cult classic Valkyrie Profile series after Lenneth and Silmeria, comes with an even darker and engaging storyline with gameplay elements that you never experienced before. In this installment of Valkyrie Profile, strategic role playing game has took a sharp turn both in terms of marketing and story as it was specially released for the acclaimed handheld Nintendo DS and unlike Lenneth and Silmeria the main protagonist is a human.
The story of this fresh release of Valkyrie Profile series evolves around the vengeance of Wylfred. Wylfred was merely a ten years old boy when Valkyrie Lenneth (main character of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth) claimed the soul of his father. Although his father became an Einherjar, it resulted in years of distress and tragedy for his family. With every passing year, Wylfred's vengeance against Lenneth grows stronger until he becomes 17 and started his saga to take revenge against Lenneth. Hel, the queen of Niflheim offered him a magical feather shed from Lenneth's wings which is called 'Destiny Plume'. Wylfred has to become a great warrior like his father in order to be noticed by the gods and their messengers. Becoming an Einherjar is his only way to fulfill his vengeance. What destiny he embraces depends on what choices he makes.
Gameplay of Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume requires the player to perform a series of strategic moves. More than 20 allies are available among which you as Wylfred can form a team of maximum four members to fight against enemies, collect items and upgrade inventory. Each member has limited moves and you have to position you team such a way so that the enemy becomes vulnerable for the team, not just for a single attack. In you finish the enemy quickly, then you will be rewarded Overkill which generates larger amount of sin. You have to generate necessary amount of sin as promised in the deal with Queen Hel, or you have to fight more difficult battles. Using the Destiny Plume strategically and carefully you can ensure maximum damage. You can give the plume to your ally which costs the life of the ally. There are multiple ways through which you can play and every way will lead you to a new ending of this multi-layered Valkyrie Profile franchise.
The graphics of Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume may not be groundbreaking but it's adequate. This installment has maintained consistency with the first version- Valkyrie Pofile: Lenneth. The graphic is constructed with 2D sprites on a 3D rendered background. The catch is that Valkyrie Profile managed to push the limits of Nintendo DS handheld in terms of graphics.
Two key characters of the game are Wylfred, the main protagonist of the game who wants to take revenge and Lenneth, who collects souls of Einherjars. Two other important characters are Ancel, faithful friend of Wylfred and Ailyth who serves Queen Hela. Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume comes with more than 20 allies from whom you can form the team. The two most influential Gods are Odin, the chief god in Norse Mythology and Freya, goddess of love and fertility.
Some especially mentionable features of Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume are:
New Storyline: The story of this Valkyrie Profile franchise is more darkly themed and for the first time the protagonist is a human.
New Strategic Dimensions: Characters have to support each other actively and along with the protagonist, his sidekicks are also very important.
New Moves and actions: Two new moves are introduced- Soul crash that can only be performed when the players will unleash their power at maximum and Overkill which is a special attack on defeated enemy to collect sin.
Multiple alternative storyline: Depending on the fate of allies, the story can go into multiple directions. This feature allows the game to be replayed again and again without repetition.
Eye candy 3d render: The 3D environment is very attractive and definitely better than prior versions.
Bonus Dungeon: There are some bonus levels while you can fight to recruit new allies.
More Characters: The game came with more than 20 characters to be chosen as allies.
