An ideal destination for those who love the outdoors, Tenerife provides travellers with a distinctive backdrop in which to discover the natural wonders of this volcanic island. The main attraction is Spain's highest mountain, Mount El Teide which is a dormant volcano that soars 3,718 metres above sea level.
Climbing up Mount El Teide is a popular activity along with exploring the surrounding Mount Teide National Park. The park which includes the Las Canadas caldera was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 and is home to a fascinating collection of plant and animal life.
Getting to Mount El Teide is relatively easy since the TITSA bus service provides access to Teide once a day from Playa de las Americas and Puerto de la Cruz. While those who find accommodation at Tenerife apartments and hotels in these two areas can easily catch the bus service, there is also a public road that runs across the caldera.
A quick way of travelling up the Mount El Teide volcano is by way of the Teleferico Cable Car which starts its ascent at around 2,356 metres. The scenic journey which lasts about eight minutes takes passengers to the La Rambleta area which is at approximately 3,555 metres. While the summit is only about 200 metres away, only those who have permits have access to it. Alternatively from La Rambleta one can head to the Pico Viejo and Fortaleza viewpoints where awe inspiring panoramas await.
Those planning to tackle Mount El Teide entirely by foot need to get a permit beforehand in order to reach the summit. Permits which are free of charge can be obtained at the Administration Office of the Teide National Park in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, while one can apply via email, post or fax ahead of time. The permits provide access for a specific time period and one should keep in mind that the path can sometimes be closed due to adverse weather conditions.
The challenging six hour climb to the top of Mount El Teide begins from Montana Blanca and takes visitors on a remarkable journey across rugged volcanic landscapes. Climbers should also remember that the weather can get decidedly colder at higher altitudes along with the fact that the decrease in oxygen levels will make breathing harder especially for those with heart conditions.
Since there are no Tenerife hotels along Mount El Teide, visitors wanting to break their journey can stay overnight at the Altavista refuge which offers basic accommodation. Located at 3,270 metres, this convenient refuge is ideal for those looking to reach the summit at daybreak. Adventurers who finally make it to the top of Mount El Teide are rewarded with unparalleled views amongst the clouds of such areas as La Gomera, Gran Canaria and La Palma.
Visitors can also spend time exploring the Mount Teide National Park which is home to many endemic species of flora and fauna. The park's resilient plant life have adapted to the extreme weather conditions and those arriving between May and June can enjoy the flowering season. 33 of the park's 168 plant species are endemic to Tenerife such as the Teide Violet, the Teide White Broom and the rare Teide Edelweiss.
The park is a biodiversity hotspot when it comes to insects as it is home to over 700 insect species including spiders, hemipternas and beetles. Flowering season brings out such insects as butterflies and honey bees, while the park also attracts a large number of birds including the blue chaffinch, the great grey shrike and the long eared owl. The Canary Island lizard and the Leisler's bat also call this area home as do such introduced species as the mouflon, the feral cat and the Algerian hedgehog.
With its magnificent vistas and rich biodiversity, the volcanic island of Tenerife provides intrepid travellers with an unforgettable outdoor adventure. So when next in search of a hotel or apartment in Tenerife, make sure to find one that is within easy reach of the Mount Teide volcano where visitors can lose themselves amidst some spectacular natural scenery.
